A 12ft tall, 270ft long single closed end AquaDam formed an L-shaped water-filled cofferdam at the corner of this pond, so a new pump intake structure could be built without taking the pond out of service. 8ft tall support AquaDams were installed behind the 12ft tall primary dam, for extra support.
Two (2) 6 inch discharge pumps were used to fill the 12ft AquaDam, shown rolled up next to the yellow pump boxes.
Overview of area to be isolated
Side view of the rolled 12ft tall AquaDam.
The 12ft tall AquaDam has been allowed to unroll down the bank, exposing the open fill-tubes at the top of the bank. Discharge hoses are inserted into the fill tubes of the AquaDam.
The AquaDam unrolls from the force exerted by the water used to fill the unrolled section.
A Telehandler forklift is used to pull on a rope which is tied to the AquaDam; this is done to turn the AquaDam during deployment.
The turn is being made.
The turn was made in two (2) different pulls, spreading out the angle of the turn.
Primary dam continues to fill. The far end of the dam has been tied off, with ropes leading to the guard rail posts at the top of the bank.
The primary dam is getting pretty full; it's time time install the support dams behind the primary dam.
This support dam is 8ft tall, 100ft long. Support dams are used to increase the 12ft dams resistance to lateral motion (sliding).
Another angle of the work site. The 8ft tall support dam was unrolled over the top of the 12ft dam, and then pulled sideways into the work area. At that time, it was filled with water, which caused it to settle to the bottom and rise above water level.
The next support dam, 8ft tall by 140ft long, has been unrolled over the top of the 12ft dam, and pulled sideways into the water. It is still being filled.
The top seam of the support dam is tied to the top seam of the primary dam, holding the 2 dams in contact while the support dam fills. The side of the support dam is folded over itself, and is unfolding toward the primary dam as the support dam fills.
All dams are full, the work area is isolated, and dewatering has begun.
Overview of isolated work area. Dewatering has begun.
The 8'x140' long AquaDam is really full, and has made great contact with the primary dam.
The work area has been dewatered, and initial site cleanup has begun.
The work area and AquaDams, five (5) months after installation. The work area is kept dewatered using sump pumps.
